Sep 20, 2020 Tour De France Stage 4 Predictions, Betting Tips, Odds & Free Bets (Sisteron Orcieres-Merlette - 1.9.2020) Sunday, 20 September 2020 09:28 Written by David Bet Stage 4, a 160km run from Sisteron to Orcieres-Merlette features the first uphill finish of this Tour de France.

Sisteron saw its last stage start in 2010. A the end of that day, Mark Cavendish outsprinted Alessandro Petacchi and Tyler Farrar in Bourg-les-Valence, while Mark Renshaw headbutted New Zealander Julian Dean. Cavendish’ lead out was expelled from the race.

Tour De France Stage 4 Odds For Today

A similar scenario will not unfold in the 4th stage of the 2020 Tour de France. No headbutting at breakneck speeds as the last 7.1 kilometres go uphill.

The peloton leaves the medieval town of Sisteron to head for Dévoluy. This ski area is – obviously – far from flat, but the road goes uphill at shallow gradients, so a GC battle is unlikely to ignite this early. Yet, you never know. Bad legs on the finish climb to Orcières-Merlette will surely have its impact. The final haul to the ski resort at an elevation of 1,825 metres is 7.1 kilometres long, while the average gradients sits at 6.7%.

It has been 31 years since the Tour last visited Orcières-Merlette. In 1989, Dutchman Steven Rooks won the uphill ITT. The ski station had a huge impact in 1971, when Luis Ocaña brought a solo attack of 60 kilometres home. His rivals Eddy Merckx and Joop Zoetemelk crossed the line 9 minutes behind the Spaniard. Ocaña dropped out of the race later and Merckx went on to win his third Tour de France.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds.

TOUR DE FRANCE STAGE 4 BETTING PREVIEW

After the brutal hills on Monday, Tuesday brings some relief. Nothing could really prevent a royal bunched sprint on the 1.5-km final straight in Nancy. The second and last hill, Côte de Maron, is crested just 16 kilometres from the finish, but the sprint teams won’t let the chance slip away. As a result, ace leader Julian Alaphilippe should have no trouble defending the yellow jersey.
This sprint in Nancy is much more straightforward compared to Stage 1 in Brussels, so it is perfectly suited for the pure sprinters with a powerful leadout.

Elia Viviani and Caleb Ewan both have strong team-mates, so we expect to see Deceuninck–Quick Step and Lotto–Soudal protecting them at the end of the race. The Australian looks to be the in-form sprinter between the two but the Itlaian will surely be in the mix.
Peter Sagan will profit from their leadout and has already proved to be almost at his top level with a 2nd place on Stage 1.
Dylan Groenewegen is the sprinter to beat on paper, but he crashed on the opening stage and his condition could be far from 100%. His team-mate Mike Teunissen took the yellow jersey in the first sprint and could be the suprise package once agian. Will he lead Groenewegen or be the dark horse?

Other dark horses could be Sonny Colbrelli, Giacomo Nizzolo, Cristophe Laporte, Andrea Pasqualon and Wout Van Aert

, but the latter is likely to be used as Groenewegen's last man.
Andre Greipel, Alexander Kristoff and Michael Matthews are good for a top 3 placement at maximum while Greg Van Avermaet should save his legs for tomorrow's stage.
